The game of basketball was developed by a man by the name of James Naismith. He taught at a school and had to make up games for the kids to play, he developed "basket ball". The game, back then, was played with a peach basket and a soccer ball. Naismith had the peach basket attached to a railing in the school gym as the "hoop". The objective, same as now, was to get the ball into the basket to score a point. But a downside to Naismith's game was that the basket had no way of letting the ball go through for easy recovery. Every time a point was scored, the game was delayed so the janitor could retrieve the ball. Naimith realized the problem and made a small hole in the bottom, just big enough to be able to poke a stick through to push the ball out.
Basketball has come a long way since Naismith first invented the game. The game has made names for many athletes and has allowed them to show their skill.
